Position Summary
The Industrial Engineering Intern — Work Measurement, Time Studies & Capacity Analysis will support parcel warehouse operations by conducting time studies, observing package flow, collecting operational data, and identifying opportunities to improve productivity, labor utilization, process consistency, and facility capacity.
This role provides hands-on exposure to parcel sortation, unloading, loading, scanning, clerical processing, conveyor operations, equipment utilization, and facility flow. The intern will work closely with Industrial Engineering, Operations, and frontline leadership to measure current work methods, document process standards, analyze operational capacity, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct time studies for warehouse parcel processing activities.
- Observe package handlers, clerks, loaders, unloaders, sorters, scanners, and support roles.
- Measure task cycle times, delay time, travel time, handling time, and non-productive time.
- Document package flow, work methods, process variation, and equipment constraints.
- Identify bottlenecks, excessive walking, rehandling, waiting time, congestion, and labor inefficiencies.
- Collect and analyze volume, labor hours, package mix, throughput, staffing, and equipment data.
- Support development of productivity standards and engineered labor expectations.
- Analyze belt speed, conveyor utilization, flow rates, and package density.
- Evaluate maximum flow throughput by work area, process path, conveyor, dock door, chute, belt, scanner, and equipment type.
- Support capacity studies to determine practical and maximum facility throughput.
- Identify operational constraints that limit facility capacity, including labor, equipment, layout, dock doors, trailer flow, staging space, and conveyor design.
- Assist with AutoCAD drawings, layout updates, process flow maps, and facility capacity diagrams.
- Build Excel summaries, charts, pivot tables, and capacity models to communicate findings.
- Assist with recommendations to improve package flow, staffing alignment, equipment utilization, process consistency, labor efficiency, and total facility capacity.
- Prepare clear summaries of observations, study results, bottlenecks, throughput constraints, and improvement opportunities for leadership.
- Typical Areas Studied
- Inbound Operations: trailer unloading, package induction, scanning, labeling, and dock flow
- Conveyor & Sortation: belt speed, package alignment, manual/automated sortation, chutes, and sort destinations
- Outbound Operations: trailer loading, dock door utilization, staging, and yard flow
- Special Handling: non-conveyables, smalls, return-to-shipper, bad labels, re-taping, and re-wrapping
- Support Processes: jam clearing, indirect labor tasks, equipment constraints, and facility layout
- Capacity Analysis: max throughput by area, equipment, process path, and total facility capacity
- Required Skills & Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum GPA of 3.2 preferred
- Basic Excel skills, including formulas, tables, charts, and pivot tables
- Strong attention to detail and ability to collect accurate operational data
- Basic math and analytical thinking
- Ability to observe operations objectively and document findings clearly
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced warehouse environment
- Ability to walk, stand, and observe operations for extended periods
- Willingness to work around conveyors, docks, trailers, and parcel handling equipment
- Willingness to travel to different facilities as needed
- Summary Statement
This role supports the development of accurate labor standards, operational improvements, and facility capacity models by measuring work methods, analyzing productivity, evaluating equipment constraints, identifying bottlenecks, and determining maximum throughput across parcel warehouse operations.
